Piping Design Engineer Associate

This position is responsible for providing Piping Engineering leadership to support project scope development, estimating, detailed design, checking, and project execution for in-house projects for this global chemical firm.

 

You will provide technical direction for Discipline Engineers and Designers (in-house and/or third party engineering firm) during the engineering phase of the projects. Additionally, this position will function as a Piping Lead to coordinate capital and expense projects at outside Engineering Contractor offices. In this capacity, the function ensures that quality, cost compliance, schedule, and constructability aspects of projects are met according to commitments.

 

Design Responsibilities: 1. Lead piping designers in-house and for engineering consultants as required. Ensure quality design, cost compliance, and schedule targets are met by design group. 2. Estimate projects, track progress, and board/field check deliverables 3. Coordinate piping documentation and design issues with project managers and other design disciplines. 4. Experience in the use of Microstation CAD Software. Familiar in Piping Codes (ASME, API, and other applicable codes. Experienced and detailed knowledge of pipe design, fabrication, and installation of small to medium capital projects. Experience in executing multiple project modifications, debottlenecking, maintenance activities, and retrofits involving multi-discipline interfaces. Must be capable of working on multiple small projects and tasks at one time.. Self-starter, good communication skills, organization, coordination, and leadership skills. Strong computer skills. Performs economic analyses and fill ROI and AFE reports for capital upgrades. Determines most effective arrangement of operations, such as mixing, crushing, heat transfer, distillation, oxidation, hydrogenation, and polymerization. Develops and implement processing methods and controls to meet quality standards in the most cost efficient manner. Investigates and resolve work-in-process problems. Recommends and implement improvements and/or modification in sequence of operations, equipment utilization, and related matters. REQUIRED SKILLS: BS degree in Engineering discipline and a minimum of eight years of progressive work experience in a specific engineering discipline and project management experience is required. Technical expert in area of specialty. Advanced ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes and apply knowledge analytically. This position provides computer aided design (CAD) detail drafting support to process design, new equipment installation and building modifications as well as standard support of engineering and maintenance activities within a large chemical manufacturing facility. Engineering disciplines supported may include civil, structural, architectural, electrical, instrumentation and process (equipment & piping). This position works with a multi-discipline team and will have contact with engineering groups and IT as well as external suppliers and contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Provide CAD support to engineering and maintenance functions. Prepares and revises computer generated 2-D engineering drawings and 3-D models according to established standards and procedures in software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Speedikon and PDS systems.  Create and revise equipment layout, piping, electrical and instrumentation, mechanical, civil, structural and architectural drawings and models.  Creates and revises drawings and models from sketches, plans, and written and verbal instructions.  Manage high volume of drawing revisions manage red-line system and verify all associated items are updated throughout the drawing set. Interact with WPNA/WCC CAD users and the service center at overseas site.  Interface and communicate with project engineers, plant engineers, engineering contractors, other designers and assembly/installation staff as required. Provides input regarding company graphics standards and procedures. Support development and documentation of design standards, user guides and procedures to create uniform drawings and documentation. Perform engineering support tasks including: plotting drawings, filing originals, creating PDF's, and occasional plant/site visits to obtain as-built information. Test updates or new version of CAD/CAE tools for backward compatibility and new functionality. Handle complex drafting assignments under minimal supervision. Other tasks and duties as assigned to support engineering and maintenance groups.


REQUIREMENTS: AA or BS degree in engineering or computer aided drafting/design or related field preferred 3+ years combined of 2-D and 3-D model computer aided drafting/design experience with software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Speedikon or PDS 3D modeling. Experience with COMOS is a plus. 3+ years of experience working with engineering, procurement and construction projects and/or large chemical manufacturing facility preferred with multiple disciplines (e.g. CSA, EIC, or Process).  Excellent written and communication skills required, including the ability to effectively respond to team members with tact and diplomacy.  Ability to work in a fast paced environment and manage multiple projects at the same time.
