Education and Experience:
An
accredited degree in a related engineering discipline is required. 5-10

Leads the Engineering Team
Interacts
daily with site managers, contractors and plant personnel. Maintains

Works

manage and mentor Engineering Department staff (presently consisting of six

Project Engineering
Prepares
and submits annual capital budgets. Owner of the mine capital program, with
overall responsibility for spending and forecasting a budget of $6 – 12
million annually. Ensures capital budgeting supports the objectives
of the five year mine plan. Prepares and submits capital appropriation
requests, including return calculations. Develops and manages capital
project engineering and construction contracts. Implements
construction/installation strategies that coordinate with Mine production
plan. Manages multiple capital projects ensuring that critical path and
budget goals are met.
Process Engineering and
Productivity
Identify
the key production processes in the underground and surface operations
which generate the highest levels of expense or impede the production
process and devise appropriate solutions.
In
conjunction with the Operations group, establish operating efficiency
targets and suitable metrics for the key components of the production
process. Identify, through research and experimentation, opportunities to
reduce costs or increase productivity within the existing structure. Work with Operations to develop
engineering solutions for production bottlenecks and problems. Support
process engineering projects to improve production rate, energy efficiency,
and mine reliability. Provides engineering resources to support
productivity measurements and methods to achieve productivity improvements
and Operational Excellence Goals.
Leverage
recent investments to increase sustainable production rates by implementing
engineering solutions to improve process effectiveness.
Mine Engineering and Risk
Management
Look
to enhance the safety of the operation and ensure compliance with all
statutory requirements. Ensure mine integrity is maintained through design
and monitoring.
Ensure
the integrity of the shafts and associated equipment. Create a ventilation
strategy for the mine, manage its implementation and maintain its
performance.
Maintenance and Reliability
Dual
Report Supervisor to Mine Maintenance Engineer. Respond to Operations and
Maintenance Manager requests to implement process improvements. Identifies
opportunities to improve efficiencies/reliability in facility
equipment. Works closely with
Maintenance Department to support Reliable Asset Management objectives.

The incumbent will be responsible for identifying, prioritizing, and
executing corrections to inefficiencies in the plant operation to increase
yields, increase throughput, reduce operation/process variability and
otherwise reduce costs. The improvements will be accomplished through more
efficient operations management, improved equipment and manpower
utilization, work method changes, procedural or process changes, or changes
in process equipment. This position will also be used as an environment for
evaluating incumbent's potential to fill line supervision position.
Incumbent will be required to function more independently with reduced
supervision, and will act as an advisor to junior engineers when required.
This position will insure that increases in operating/process efficiencies
and expected cost reductions are achieved.
Major Activities: 50% Provide
technical support to Technical Manager and Operations management for
process improvements and optimization. Process projects are a major factor
in monthly activities and include development and utilization of process
improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs. This is accomplished
by applying engineering and technical skills to problem solving. 20%
Analyze operating data to insure operating procedures and specifications
are properly adhered to. This is critical to avoid process upsets. Revise
and update operating procedures consistent with process optimization
including improvements. 20% Coordinate with Operations to solve process
problems, i.e. process/production troubleshooting. Design and testing of
problem solutions and recommendations is an integral part of this task.
Training and education of operating personnel is also included in this
area. 10% Review and transmit information to Process and Operations through
project summary reports and monthly reports. Effective communication
through clear, concise reporting is critical in documenting and solving
problems.
Requirements: A BS or MS in
metallurgical or chemical engineering with knowledge of operations,
research and industrial engineering principals applicable to heavy industry
with chemical and pyrometallurgical processes. As
this is a senior position requiring incumbent to perform functions with
autonomy, several years of experience is required. Typically, previously
held positions should be that of process engineer. A minimum of 5 years and
a preference of 7+ years would be required to satisfactorily perform the
assigned tasks. The incumbent will have good communicative and
organizational skills to be able to focus the resources of several
departments on projects and problems. Experience in a heavy industrial
environment will provide necessary experience and use of resources. The
incumbent will need to develop an intuition about the practicality of ideas
and suggestions. Incumbent will develop skills to identify, analyze, and
solve problems with minimal supervision. Develop skills to train junior
level people.
The incumbent should be familiar
with chemical processing equipment operation, but actual operation is
required only when training, troubleshooting, or in startup situations. The
incumbent should be adept at using a programmable calculator and should be
familiar with the use of computers and associated programs to enhance
analytical efficiencies. Incumbent should be capable of doing extensive
analysis of problems and communicating this and recommendations to
management by both verbal and written means. The reports need to be
logically summarized to facilitate use and written for the intended
audience. Calculation should be summarized but details should be available
in appendix or file for later review if required. The incumbent should have
human relations and communicative skills to bring together resources to
complete assignments. Decisions on how to solve the problem at hand, what
methods, testing, etc. The position will generally be a staff function with
responsibility and decision making authority subject to review by the VP
Operations and the Technical Manager. Some direct supervision skills will
